RECCOMENDED WALK 1.
Bolzano – Jenesien – high plateau on the Salten mountain
The best parkplace is the Tschögglbergerhof hotel just above the village of Jenesien (San Genesio). The first part of the walk leads along a farm access road with very little traffic, marked with the letter T. After a sharp right-hand bend take the footpath marked T which breaks off to the left into a pine wood. Continue following the sign T, passt a group of houses, then downhill for a short distance into a hollow up on the opposite side to the Tomanegger mountain inn (0471 340008 – approx. 1 ¼ - 1 ½ hours from the Tschögglbergerhof).
After a well deserved rest and perhaps refreshments, follow the trail across the road to Flaas and along the forestry road leading uphill in a moderate climb for around 20 minutes until you reach a clearing of meadows dappled here and there with the shade of larches, characteristic of the Salten high plateau on the rounded Tschögglberg mountain. The view is spectacular, with the Dolomites to the east (the Rosengarten massif, the Schlern, the Lang- and Platt-Kofel and the pinnacles of the Geisler-Spitzen).
On a short distance from there the pathway joins a forestry road marked 1 (European long-distance hiking route E 5). Keep to this trail leading southwards for approx. 30 min. until you come to the Edelweiss hotel and restaurant (1350 m; 0471 354106). Having fortified yourself once again, we recommend you to take the trail marked E at the house opposite the restaurant to avoid the asphalted road. From there the Köning Laurin hotel is a further 25 – 30 min. walk followed by a further 10 min. to the Tschöggelbergerhof where the walk started.
Total walking time: approx. 3 ½ hours.
Difference in elevation: Tschöggelbergerhof – Tomanegger: + 100 m; Tomanegger – Salten high plateau: + 70 m; the remainder is more or less level or downhill.
Recommended seasons: April – June (spring Alpine flowers); October - November; the route is also extremely scenic in winter for snowshoe walks (pathways also groomed for walking) and in summer as a respite from the heat of the valley.
RECCOMENDED WALK 2.
Bolzano - Kohlern – Wolftal– Schneiderwiesen meadows
This walk begins at the valley terminal of the historical Kohlern cable car – the original was inaugurated in 1908 as the world’s very first passenger overhead cable car. A replica of the original coach can be seen at the top terminal (1135 m). Before heading off it is worth climbing the 36 metre-high wooden viewing tower (signposted) which gives you a superb view of the town, the Adige Valley and the ring of high mountains which encircle it.
From there the trail marked 4 (E 5) takes you to Herren-Kohlern in around 15 minutes (1181 m) - a tiny hamlet comprising a few farmhouses and the little church of Our Lady of the Assumption - then on to the Wolftal valley along an easy forestry road (still marked 4 – E 5) until you encounter the little Alpine farmstead Wolff (1340 m), approx. 40 min. from Herren-Kohlern. At this point the trail becomes a little steeper leading to “Totes Moos” (1472 m) in around 30 min. It comprises a green area of flat land with a biotope. There is also a wayside shrine and a signpost.
Take the footpath to your right marked 1 in the direction of the Klaus farmstead. It is worth making a detour (approx. 30 min. in total) to the viewing point called Rothenstein which affords a magnificent prospect of the Adige Valley far below. Having rejoined the footpath, continue in an easy climb up to the Klaus farmstead (1528 m). At a certain point the road begins to descend. Take the well-maintained road downhill, perhaps cutting through some of the switchbacks using pathways through the forest to the public house and restaurant Gasthof Schneiderwiesen (1372 m; around 1 hour from Totes Moos excluding the detour to Rothenstein). This is a good place to stop and enjoy some refreshments before continuing the walk along the footpath marked 1 back in the direction of Bauern-Kohlern and the top cable car terminal. Refreshments are also available at Kohlern at the hotels Kohlern and Klaushof.
The walk can be shortened by taking the footpath marked 3 which breaks off to the right just beyond Herren-Kohlern at the entrance to the Wolftal valley (signposted Schneiderwiesen), leading to the Schneiderwiesen inn in around 30-40 min. From there the footpath marked 1 takes you back to the cable car terminal.
Total walking time: 4 hours;
Best period: May - October;
Differences in elevation: Kohlern – Herren-Kohlern – Totes Moos: + 337 m; Totes Moos – Klaus-Alm: + 56 m; Klaus Alm – Schneiderwiesen: – 156 m; Scheiderwiesen – cable car: - 237 m
