Since 1998 it has been home to Ötzi, the ice man, whose remains are exhibited together with the artefacts and clothes found on him in 1991 quite by accident near the Giogo di Tisa/Tisenjoch pass in Val Senales. His discovery has triggered important research on his life period, about 5,300 years ago. As well as his habitat, the Museum documents Ötzi’s living environment, the history of the finds, the research, the “criminal case” regarding his death as well as curiosities about him. There are different special
exhibitions on archaeological topics from South Tyrol to supplement the permanent display.
