The Chapel of Saint John – Church of the Dominicans

Cappella_di_San_Giovanni.jpeg

The Chapel of Saint John, attached to the Church of the Dominicans in Bolzano, is one of the most extraordinary examples of Giotto-style painting in the entire Alpine region. Commissioned around 1330 by the powerful Florentine de’ Rossi–von Botsch family as a private burial chapel, it preserves a complete fresco cycle that includes stories of saints, meditations on death, and reflections on divine judgment. A medieval masterpiece that survived centuries of neglect, deconsecration, and bombings. Today it is accessible again to those who truly want to understand Bolzano, narrated by the voice of Giovanni Novello, art curator and scholar of the monument.
