Bolzano-Bozen Christmas Market

For 35 years now, during Advent, the city has been enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the Christkindlmarkt. An artistic nativity scene in piazza Municipio (Rathausplatz) invites visitors to contemplate the Nativity, while the large Christmas tree illuminates and decorates piazza Walther (Waltherplatz), just a few metres from the Gothic bell tower of the Cathedral.

In piazza Walther (Waltherplatz) and along via Stazione (Bahnhofstraße), traditional wooden stalls showcase some of the finest South Tyrolean handicrafts made from wool, including jackets, hats and slippers made of felt and boiled wool, as well as wooden utensils and decorative objects. The Christmas Market dedicated to artistic craftsmanship can be found in piazza Duomo (Domplatz) and along via Isarco (Eisackstraße).

Gastronomy is, as always, given plenty of space: South Tyrolean speck and cured meats, fritters, apple juice, strudel, traditional biscuits and Christmas sweets, as well as the local wines Santa Maddalena and Lagrein. This year, the Wine Lounge once again offers the opportunity to taste South Tyrolean sparkling wines, grappa and local spirits.

The sparkling market stalls delight the eye with the colours and shapes of traditional decorations made from glass, wood and ceramics. Local specialities tempt the palate, while the aromas of mulled wine and cinnamon fill the air. The sense of hearing is also immersed in the atmosphere, with the gentle sounds of Christmas carols and the music of alpine horn players. Advent musical events take place in various squares and streets throughout the city centre, while numerous concerts are also held in the churches.

A rich programme of accompanying events, art exhibitions, markets and other activities also extends to less central neighbourhoods, including the Christmas Market in piazza Mazzini (Mazziniplatz), held on weekends from 27 November to 20 December.

The guided tours organised by the Tourist Board are also consistently popular, taking visitors to discover numerous places around the city that never fail to surprise even the most attentive traveller. There is therefore something for everyone: a holiday that will remain a pleasant memory for the whole family, including children, who will find a dedicated area with numerous activities along via Stazione (Bahnhofstraße).

The 35th edition of the Christmas Market will open on Thursday, 26 November, with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree in piazza Walther (Waltherplatz).

For many years, the Christmas Market has also been committed to organising an environmentally friendly and sustainable event. Visitors are therefore encouraged to make use of the excellent rail connections linking Bolzano-Bozen with other major centres in northern Italy.
