Bolzano Wines: Grown by Family Hands
224 family-run wineries shape the identity of Cantina Bolzano-Kellerei Bozen and ensure its quality. The cooperative model combines tradition, sustainability, and economic stability.
With 340 hectares of vineyards, 224 members, and an annual production exceeding three million bottles, Cantina Bolzano-Kellerei Bozen is one of South Tyrol’s largest wine producers. Its distinctive strength lies in its cooperative structure. “We give a face to our members, all family-run wineries from Bolzano,” says Chairman Philipp Plattner. Despite current challenges, the winery ensures stable income for its growers, with an annual turnover of around €23 million, helping to preserve local wine traditions. Among its members is also the Bolzano Tourism Board, which owns vineyards around Runkelstein and Maretsch castles.
Bolzano, with around 500 hectares of vineyards, would not be the same without its wine-growing landscape. The cooperative cultivates 340 hectares between 200 and 1,000 meters above sea level across areas including Gries, Moritzing, Siebeneich, Missian, St. Georgen, Glaning, St. Magdalena, St. Justina, Leitach-Chiusa, Ritten, and Karneid. “It is characteristic of South Tyrol that cooperatives like ours become leading enterprises,” Plattner notes. Members commit to delivering all their grapes, ensuring sustainable production.
Winemaking takes place in a state-of-the-art facility in Moritzing-San Maurizio, where gravity is used to minimize pumping and preserve grape quality. Despite higher production costs, the wines are now exported to 30 countries.
Higher elevations yield white wines such as Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer, mid-altitudes produce St. Magdalener, while lower areas grow Cabernet, Merlot, and Lagrein. The sunny Bolzano-Bozen basin provides ideal conditions for viticulture.
The annual “Lorenzinacht-Calici di Stelle” event in August, held under the arcades of Bolzano, offers an opportunity to showcase these wines, appreciated since Roman and German imperial times.
