Events in the City: The Bolzano Christmas Market

The most anticipated event of the year in Bolzano is, without doubt, the Christmas Market. The traditional Christkindlmarkt, now in its 34th edition (and the very first one ever held in Italy), wraps the city in pure holiday magic. The medieval arcades and squares of the historic center are beautifully decorated, while in Walther Square- the city’s beating heart- the large illuminated Christmas tree and the Gothic cathedral bell tower set the stage for rows of sparkling wooden stalls offering the very best of local craftsmanship and culinary delights.

Visitors can savor South Tyrolean specialties like speck and cured meats, fritters, apple juice, strudel, traditional Christmas cookies and pastries, as well as local wines such as Santa Maddalena and Lagrein, featured again this year in the Wine Lounge. Spumante, grappas, and regional distillates can also be discovered at a dedicated stand. But what makes Bolzano’s Christmas Market truly special is how it enchants all five senses: the scent of mulled wine and cinnamon drifting through the air, the sound of carols and alpine horn players, the bright colors of glass, wood, and ceramic decorations, and the warmth of woolen fabrics, cozy clothing, and handmade slippers.

The market will open with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree in Walther square on Thursday, November 27. Beyond Walther square, the Christmas spirit spreads throughout the city: in Piazza del Grano-Korn Platz, the Solidarity Market will once again welcome local non-profit associations until December 23. Following last year’s successful debut, the Christmas Park also returns – stretching from the cathedral’s main portal along Via Isarco to the Capuccini Park – with 18 charming stands dedicated to artisan creations.

Throughout the Advent season, the city comes alive with concerts in squares, streets, and churches, nativity displays, art exhibitions, guided tours, and a packed calendar of events. Families can enjoy countless activities designed especially for children, while even the city’s quieter neighborhoods join in with festive happenings.

Bolzano’s Christmas Market is also committed to sustainability, striving to be an eco-friendly celebration. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the excellent train connections that link the city to major destinations across northern Italy.
