Making A Flower Crown With Children
Spring is a celebration of colors and flowers. For young children, the desire to go outside and run freely in nature after the long winter is something to be encouraged, as it brings well-being not only to children but to the whole family. Meadows, woods, and the riverbanks surrounding the city center offer countless ideas for creating small floral arrangements or using natural materials that can be collected without causing harm. Wildflowers, twigs, bark, or small stones are gathered with enthusiasm by every child, and with the help of parents or teachers, many educational and fun activities can be carried out that foster skills and knowledge.
One of the simplest creations is a small bouquet of wildflowers and herbs, an easy hands-on activity that teaches children how to pick flowers safely and combine them creatively. Making a flower crown requires a bit more skill and makes children feel like little princes and princesses. The most common flowers in spring meadows are the yellow dandelions and small wild daisies. To help your child make a crown, show them how to join two stems by bending upward the stem of the flower that stands more vertically and crossing it behind the other stem as close as possible to the flower head. Then wrap the remaining part of the stem around the other flower’s stem.
Repeat the same process with the next flower, and continue until you reach a length equal to or slightly greater than the circumference of the child’s head. To close the crown, you can tie a blade of grass, a sturdier stem, or a ribbon to each end and finish it with a nice bow, or you can weave the final section around the beginning, hiding the stems behind the flower heads. Any type of flower can be used, and crowns made with a mix of different flowers look especially rustic and charming.
If you use small flowers, it’s best to weave several at a time rather than just one, so the result will be fuller and more compact. If you choose to use dandelions, the crown will look very lush, but be careful with the sap, as it can stain clothing.
