Fashion On The Go: Simple Tips for What to Wear in the Mountains This Summer

A hike in the mountains surrounded by nature is great for both body and mind, but to truly enjoy the experience, having the right gear is essential. Footwear and clothing are fundamental to spending time in nature comfortably, because—as the saying goes—there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

The first rule to follow is the classic advice to dress in layers. Secondly, it’s important to remember that casual or gym clothing typically worn in the city is not suitable for the mountains. Cotton -commonly used for sweatshirts, tracksuits, or jeans- is not appropriate because it doesn’t breathe, traps moisture from sweat, and soaks up rainwater, which then takes a long time to dry.

Trekking clothing is specifically designed for outdoor use and has three key features: breathability, waterproofing, and lightness. Base layers, for example, are made from water-repellent fibers that dry very quickly. The mid-layer should be warm and light, a goal achieved through the use of polyester and similar fibers. These garments are soft, create thermal insulation, and remain lightweight even when wet, as they do not absorb water.

Maximum breathability is also required for jackets -they must allow sweat and moisture to escape while remaining waterproof from the outside. Water and cold air must not penetrate, a function provided by fibers that act as membranes. The same principles -combined with fit and flexibility- apply to trekking pants, which must support movement while being resistant to possible tearing.

As for hiking boots, general advice and information aren’t enough. In this case, the best thing to do is visit a specialty store with qualified staff who can help you make the right choice. In high-end stores, you'll often find sloped platforms and different test terrains, simulating stones, gravel, and other natural surfaces to test your boots. Take your time and keep one key tip in mind: any minor discomfort you feel in the store will be amplified during your hike. Trust the experienced staff, they know how to guide you toward the best choice.
